Midcentury Modern Designed by Protege of Frank Lloyd Wright Brings Big Buzz

Illinois

A midcentury modern ranch home designed by Don Erickson, a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, has generated a lot of attention and at least one solid offer.

Valerie Campbell of Baird & Warner, who listed the Inverness, IL, property for $594,500, handled 30 showings in the first week.

“The type of buyers it’s attracting are really interested in midcentury modern,” she says. “They know the name and they love that style of home. That dramatic, diamond-shaped window line? You don’t see that in homes.”

Located in the suburbs northwest of Chicago, the 3,700-square-foot home has four bedrooms and three bathrooms.

Erickson’s other projects include the Indian Lakes Resort in Bloomingdale, IL, and other homes around Chicago’s suburbs.

The property was built in 1954 for Erickson’s father, and one of its biggest selling points is that it’s on a 1.6-acre lot, even though it’s close to the city.

“We’re drawing a lot of interest from people in the city,” says Campbell, “and even the North Shore. You feel like you’re outside, even when you’re not. The view is different in every season. There’s [also] plenty of room to add a pool.”

Since the pandemic began, pools have become a desirable amenity in the area. In prior years, Campbell says, a pool might have been seen as a tough sell, but typical buyers today appreciate having entertainment on their home turf.

The seller, who has owned the home since 2013, is only the third owner. Many improvements have been made in that time, including updating the kitchen with stainless-steel appliances and cabinetry scored from Chicago’s Merchandise Mart. A new roof was installed in 2013.

“My client has had parties for one hundred people, flowing into the backyard,” says Campbell. She adds that you can easily fit 50 people indoors for a party.

Original to the design are exposed-brick walls, redwood-plank ceilings, built-in cabinetry in some of the hallways, and planters that are attached to exterior walls. An open layout and multiple fireplaces add warmth.

What’s life like in Inverness?

With a population of 7,438, “It’s a great community,” says Campbell.

Cushioned by the villages of Barrington and South Barrington and bordered to the east by Palatine, it’s a few minutes to the tollway, 10 minutes to the Metra stop, and close to grocery stores and dining. Deer Park Town Center, an outdoor lifestyle mall, is a 10-minute drive away.

“It’s a nice little oasis, but you’re accessible to all the amenities,” says Campbell.
