Barack Obama’s Childhood Home in Honolulu Sails Onto the Market for $2.2M

It’s hard to put a price on a place where a president grew up. A brush with history doesn’t count in housing comps, but it can spur buyers to go above and beyond a list price. And when you factor in the cost of living in Hawaii, prices can really spiral.

So while $2.2 million for an otherwise unremarkable home on Oahu may seem exorbitant, it’s a pittance if you’re into presidential history. From 1964 to 1967, former President Barack Obama resided in this Craftsman-style, 1,976-square-foot home in Honolulu’s Manoa neighborhood.

Built in 1947, this three-bedroom, two-bathroom residence also comes with a 292-square-foot detached cottage, which could be used as a vacation rental for additional income. The cottage has a separate entrance, on Walu Way, for additional guest privacy.

Because this is Hawaii, a lanai is naturally part of the home’s layout. The lanai on the main house clocks in at just under 350 square feet. The spacious yard would be—pardon the pun—fruitful for an owner with a green thumb.

The home, which last changed hands in 2006 for $1.3 million, needs updates, particularly in the baths and kitchen. The median list price in the Manoa neighborhood is $1.2 million.

The home’s hardwood floors in the living room and French doors in some of the rooms—along with built-ins in bedrooms—are good anchors for any future renovations.

Obama lived in the home from the age of 3 to 6, while his mother attended the nearby University of Hawaii at Manoa. Obama was born in Honolulu and partly raised by his maternal grandparents. He attended Punahou School in Honolulu during the 1970s, long before going on to become leader of the free world.
