Actress Anne Hathaway is looking to walk away from her New York City apartment. She and her husband, actor and businessman Adam Shulman, have placed their full-floor Upper West Side penthouse on the market for $3,495,000, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The couple purchased the early 1900s-era property in 2016 for $2.55 million, the Journal noted. The two then embarked on a “meticulous” renovation of the historic space.
“The space, as it was in 2016, had been renovated several times prior—all original moldings and detail had been lost or destroyed,” says listing agent Jeremy V. Stein with Sotheby’s International Realty–Downtown Manhattan. “The ceilings were low, the rooms divided in awkward proportions, [and] there was an opportunity to bring it back to life.”
The redesign by Gramercy Design replicated original and period moldings that now co-exist with modern updates such as herringbone-patterned floors and new French casement windows. A highlight of the mansion is the huge terrace.
For the utmost in privacy and security, the two-bedroom unit is accessed by a private key-locked elevator.
From an entry gallery, you’ll find an open floor plan with a light-filled living room with fireplace as well as a dining area. The adjacent state-of-the-art kitchen boasts an 18-foot ceiling with a skylight, Lumix quartzite countertops, and Miele appliances.
An additional perk of the penthouse: The living area features retractable doors to a large terrace, extending the living space outside. The alfresco area includes a living space, dining area, kitchen, and views of landmark buildings such as the Dakota and the San Remo.
In the private wing, the master suite includes a skylight with electric shades, a walk-in closet, and bath with a free-standing tub. Private storage comes with the unit.
“Every time people walk into the building, steps from Central Park, there is an overwhelming sensation of stepping back in time. The grand entrance, original sweeping staircase, and intimate elevator are from a bygone era of New York City,” Stein adds.
The building is close to shopping, dining, and cultural attractions, including Lincoln Center.
Hathaway and Shulman picked up a country house in Connecticut in 2016 for $2.8 million. The Colonial in Westport measures 4,100 square feet and features a roof deck, pergola terraces, English gardens, a heated pool, outdoor kitchen, and a “party barn.” The couple also reportedly own a home in Los Angeles.
The actress, 37, has starred in “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Ocean’s 8,” and “Les Misérables,” for which she won an Academy Award for best supporting actress.
