Mountain homes, lake houses, and country cabins are often constructed from pine logs and layers upon layers of rustic decor.
We’ve found a perfect place for a buyer in the mood for something a little different. On the market for $2.2 million, this gorgeous home in Lake Arrowhead, CA, is a contemporary antidote to the tired decor often seen in vacation homes.
With fresh coats of white paint and architectural details like floating shelves, white-brick fireplaces, vertical shiplap walls, and a claw-foot tub, it’s a refreshing tilt into sophistication.
Built in 1947, the three-level home overlooks Emerald Bay. It’s been outfitted with high-end finishes including Heath Ceramics tile, Farrow & Ball paint, and Waterworks fixtures.
The interiors were designed by Jenni Kayne, and the result is California cool all the way. Kayne is a California-based interior designer with celeb clients, including Jessica Alba, Brooklyn Decker, and Kristen Bell. She also has seven namesake retail stores across the country and has collaborated on designs with brands like Pottery Barn and Parachute.
Design details like Kayne’s nesting baskets crafted from elephant grass and cozy alpaca blankets in soothing shades like oatmeal helped to contribute to this four-bedroom, four-bathroom home’s complete transformation.
“When we found the house, it was dark, dated, and totally untouched,” says Kayne, who noted the home’s lake views as a particular highlight.
“There was just so much potential that we couldn’t pass it up,” she says. “I could immediately see how we could transform the house into a light, airy lake home that felt like … a place to relax and recharge.”
She worked with Julia Hunter, president of the Jenni Kayne brand, to channel a “family-vacation vibe.”
They retained the top floor’s pitched ceiling—making the two bedrooms on that level feel “very cabin cozy,” says Hunter—and a brick wood-burning fireplace in the master bedroom.
“We thought this was the perfect place to blend Jenni’s clean and bright minimal style with the rustic quality of a traditional lake house,” says Hunter. They also knew the attached bunkhouse would be a highlight as a space for kids.
Tucked into the San Bernardino National Forest, there’s even a trail that begins at the home’s master suite. Patios overlook the water and forest.
Kayne has been busy with her interior design career, including traveling the U.S. in a retrofitted Airstream/pop-up shop, but renovating a house tied to her brand—which includes clothing, shoes, fashion accessories, and home decor—was always a dream.
“We are all about inspiring women to live well,” says Kayne, “and we thought what better way to do this than through educational home-renovation content and bringing amazing women together at the house through special experiences.”
Until the home finds a buyer, the plan is to host on-site retreats.
Kayne is also the author of “Pacific Natural: Simple Seasonal Entertaining,” and her Instagram is a love letter to California’s soothing neutral hues—found in both the landscape and home design.
The home is listed with Jenna Cooper.
