She hails from New Zealand, but the director Niki Caro has lived in a 1920s Mediterranean Revival luxury house in the Hollywood Hills for the last three years. She has now put her home in the hills on the market for $2,695,000.

Before deciding to sell, Caro directed a spectacular renovation of the four-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom hillside hacienda. In 2018, she paid $1,575,000 for the home, which was built in 1925.

It measures 3,071 square feet and was originally built for Hugo Kirchhofer, the founding musical director of the nearby Hollywood Bowl.

In fact, a door at the rear of the yard leads to a scenic walking path that takes you right to the Hollywood Bowl. No need to worry about pesky traffic or expensive parking—a big deal in Los Angeles.

Although the home is tucked away in the hills, it’s also just minutes from Runyon Canyon, and, to the north, Universal Studios. It’s a perfect location for an in-demand Hollywood director, or any buyer who wants to be in close proximity to the industry side of Hollywood.

Caro’s home sits on an elevated lot, so it offers excellent views of canyons, the Los Angeles skyline, and the ocean beyond, on a clear day.

Large patios, balconies, decks and windows take full advantage of the unique vistas.

Although the official property description notes that the home has three stories, there are four if you count the two-car garage at street level.

Those multiple levels don’t mean that the home’s ceilings are low. At entry level, there’s a living room with soaring ceilings and a gorgeous stained-glass window. The living space has arched French doors that lead to a balcony with a spectacular view, refinished oak floors, and an elegant fireplace.

The recent renovation is perhaps most evident in the kitchen, which has open, modern shelving, gleaming white quartzite countertops, an island suitable for dining, and Fisher & Paykel stainless-steel appliances.

There’s an adjacent dining area and a cozy breakfast nook with a leather banquette and pocket sliding doors that open to a colorful Moroccan courtyard.

Upstairs, you’ll find a spacious, airy master bedroom with a charming window-seat and French doors that lead out to yet another balcony. There’s also a wall of built-in walnut shelving, drawers, and closet space. The floors underfoot are also walnut.

There’s another bedroom and bathroom upstairs, an additional one down below, and the fourth has its own private entrance and can be used as a guest suite, home office, or gym.

Outdoors, there are multiple decks, patios, seating areas, and small grassy lawns adorned by brilliant bougainvillea and strings of Edison lights.

A charming fountain welcomes guests in front, and in back, they can be entertained in an inviting dining pavilion. There’s even room for a pool, if that’s on a buyer’s list of must-haves.
